Understanding New Jersey's schools, with public data

NJ School Data is a small, growing collection of free, interactive tools for making sense of New Jersey's public schools and districts.

Everything here is built on data the state already publishes — enrollment, demographics, and more — reorganized so anyone can explore it. The goal is to help parents, educators, and neighbors get a clearer picture of the schools and districts they care about, without needing to dig through spreadsheets or file a records request.

I'm Marc Lavallee, and I make these tools. I've spent a long career at the intersection of journalism and technology, building things that help people understand the world through information. I'm also a parent, with a personal stake in the success of New Jersey's students and the schools that nurture them.

Every number here traces back to a public source, and I try to show the work: which dataset, which years, and how each figure was derived. This is an ongoing project, and more tools are on the way.
